About the Development Team

The Development Team at the San Diego Rescue Mission is a high energy team of fundraising individuals who are passionate about serving those experiencing homelessness. The Development team is responsible for implementing the funding plan and raising the support needed to maintain and grow the San Diego Rescue Mission. It works closely with our Program staff to identify and assist in meeting organizational needs. Individuals who apply for this position should enjoy a team atmosphere and have strong communication skills but also be able to successfully manage their own workload with ease. About the Role

The Director of Donor Relations is a new addition to the growing Development Program at the San Diego Rescue Mission. This person will be a key leader and strategist for our donor cultivation programs, responsible for overseeing four Donor Officers. We are seeking an individual who is highly relational, a servant-hearted leader, and enjoys building and executing new initiatives. This position best suits a sales-minded individual with strong communication, relationship and management skills. The DODR will work closely with the VP of Development and will be expected to model their walk with Christ and calling to serve others as they achieve organizational goals


The Director of Donor Relations serves on the Development Team as a key leader in developing strategy, cultivating donor relationships, providing accountability, and setting direction. They help to set the agenda, coordinate major donor and planned giving activities, and support the efforts of the Development Team.  This position is primarily responsible for leading the team of Donor Officers, overseeing the Major Donor program, Middle Donor Program and Planned Giving Program. The Director of Donor Relations will play a key role in building the donor cultivation efforts of the Rescue Mission, as well as planning strategic donor events and cultivating our major donors and key partners. This position is also a key spiritual leader of the Development Team and will support teammates on a coaching and pastoral level.

Skills / Requirements

Education:  Minimum Bachelor’s Degree in Business or related field from an accredited institution.

Experience: Minimum of 5 years Development or fundraising experience. Nonprofit experience preferred. 

Skills and Abilities: Working knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, Access, Outlook); typing (min 35 wpm); coordinate and/or direct a variety of complex tasks and assignments simultaneously and successfully; exercise good judgment and make sensible decisions; attentive to detail; prioritize effectively; effective oral and written communication skills; eagerness to learn and be trained; work both independently and as part of a team; provide information to public by answering questions and requests; regular, timely attendance.

This position is full time exempt position, eligible for benefits.  Employer pays 85% of medical, also included employer paid life/ADD and disability plan, vacation, holidays and sick pay.  Dental and vision available at additional cost, voluntary benefits for life/ADD and a 401K retirement plan with employer match once vested.
