Job Description

The Director of the Partners for Hunger Relief (PHR) Program serves as a member of the Director team and reports directly to the VP of Operations. This position provides leadership and direction to the PHR staff and job training program for students, and sets the direction and culture of the PHR program. The PHR Director implements changes and updates to the program that are both spiritually formed and embodies a servant leadership approach.

Essential Responsibilities

To oversee Partner for Hunger Relief Department

  • Directs the food distribution for Partners for Hunger Relief, and works with local agencies in planning and coordination.
  • Solicit new donations from local catering and food establishments to improve the quality of the Mission's food inventory.
  • Oversees the food distribution for community and other external programs, and works with local agencies in planning and coordination.
  • Prepares reports and provides statistics to management and community partners in assessing or reporting on departmental needs and/or progresses.
  • Supports and participates in the Job Training program; assists Program staff in creating a productive, therapeutic, educational and professional environment that enables students to learn and/or develop job skills and appropriate workplace behaviors.
  • Oversees the data inventory system.
  • Manages the equipment maintenance program and coordinate with vendors for repairs and/or replacement. 
  • Partners with other department heads and staff (particularly in Food Service department) about food needs, production, space, continuity and record control so that all departmental activities remain coordinated and run smoothly.
  • Ensures that all appropriate health, safety and security regulations are being followed with regard to personal safety and safety of inventory.
  • Provides operational analysis and continuous improvement opportunities with implementation plans.

To manage material donation and distribution 

  • Manages the material donation program.
  • Oversees the safe receipt, storage, retrieval, processing of merchandise and timely dispatch of goods.
  • Coordinates with other departments in donation pick-ups and deliveries to various departments.
  • Manages the vehicle donation program.
  • Oversees the material and vehicle donation solicitation using internal and external collaborations with performance tracking and correlation to increased material donations.
  • Organizes, controls, monitors, and evaluates performance related to material and vehicle donations.
  • Ensures quality in the process, preparation, retrieval and/or delivery of materials to Mission.
  • Manages physical inventory processes and cycle count maintenance; maximizes space utilization. 
  • Oversees the inventory system for material donation. 

To oversee all administrative responsibilities of PHR

  • Exercises fiscal responsibility over program budget by planning strategically, setting objectives, developing short and long term goals and preparing for program growth, effectiveness, and success
  • Preserves a supportive work environment by treating people with dignity, respect, compassion and integrity at all times, and works to resolve grievances; maintains professionalism and promotes a positive Mission image.
  • Interviews, selects, trains, coaches, and develops PHR staff as a team unit and as part of the larger SDRM team.
  • Prepares both formal and informal managerial reports and/or presentations to leadership team, various managerial staff and any external partner organizations.

To provide spiritual leadership and guidance for PHR

  • Helps create a culture of prayer and biblical context.
  • Encourages, supports and serves department staff by promoting biblical lessons that promotes spiritual growth.
  • Serves as spiritual resource for staff and students.

Skills / Requirements

Education:  Minimum high school diploma Bachelor degree in Business Management preferred

Experience: Minimum three years full-time work experience in a managerial capacity in a warehouse environment, including inventory management and control experience.  Knowledge of inventory and warehousing technology and methodology preferred.  Able to manage a diverse environment with focus on customer service.  Previous experience with the homeless, substance abusers, mentally ill and /or dually diagnosed preferred.  Nonprofit experience preferred.

Skills and Abilities: Working knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, Access, Outlook); typing (min 35 wpm); coordinate and/or direct a variety of complex tasks and assignments simultaneously and successfully; exercise good judgment and make sensible decisions; attentive to detail; prioritize effectively; effective oral and written communication skills; eagerness to learn and be trained; work both independently and as part of a team; provide information to public by answering questions and requests; regular, timely attendance.

Special License/Certification: None

Travel/Transportation: The incumbent must travel on a regular (or periodic) basis, as the job requires.  The incumbent must have reliable transportation (public transportation may be acceptable depending on the purpose of travel).  If the incumbent receives authorization to use a Mission vehicle to perform duties, he or she must present a current California driver’s license and good driving record in order to be placed on the Mission’s insurance policy.


The incumbent has a shared office that is generally clean and comfortable.  It may include some minor annoyances such as noise, odors, drafts, etc.  The incumbent is in a non-confined office-type setting in which he or she is free to move about at will. The incumbent works in a residential setting, which consists of individuals who may have a mental or physical disability or illness.

  • Must work evenings, overnights, weekends, and/or holidays as needed

This position is full time, eligible for benefits, employer pays 85% of medical, also included employer paid life/ADD and disability plan, vacation, paid holidays and sick pay.  Dental and vision available at additional cost, voluntary benefits for life/ADD and a 401K retirement plan with employer match.
