The Truck Driver position is a great opportunity to those who seek to make a difference in our community by serving with San Diego Rescue Mission (SDRM). Our position as a SDRM Truck driver is a position that requires of a person to be able to multitask and be responsible with attendance. As a truck driver you are also required to be a mentor and trainer for our SDRM students. The driver is expected to drive on a daily basis to donor’s houses, apartments or buildings and pick up donations in San Diego county. We must be able to provide great customer service, be gentle with our precious donations as the items are needed to be in good condition to be sold at our thrift stores.   We are looking for a driver that is energetic, has knowledge of San Diego city roads, computer skills/cellphone app, good communication, team player and customer service. Our future candidate should have skills with truck safety, loading/unloading trucks with furniture, and most importantly someone that has faith and desire to help those in need.

Successful applicant would drive Mission truck to transport materials to and from specified local destinations. Assists to establish the Mission's credibility and reputation by providing good donor relations and a professional image. Pick-up donations and deliver to warehouse and thrift stores. Position is Monday-Friday days with some weekends and holidays as needed. Duties include but not limited to:

Maintains regular communication with Receiving Center personnel and appropriate Retail Operations personnel regarding situations such as absences, early/late departures, early/late arrivals, delivery instructions, changes to route and reschedules or discrepancies in donations.

Communicates daily with Receiving Center personnel regarding departmental needs and distribution of materials.

Plans daily route and schedule in a cost-effective and time-efficient manner.

Drives truck to destination; prepares receipts for donors.

Submits driver report sheets, route sheets and donor receipts to Receiving Center Coordinator in a timely manner.

Loads and unloads truck in designated areas.

Marks and labels furniture to avoid any loss of product.

Handles merchandise in a proper way to avoid loss of product or damage.

Attends public relations and customer service training on an annual basis.

Operates forklift to help place merchandise in proper places as needed.

Places incoming donations in designated areas.

Reports any valuable donations to Receiving Center personnel and stores those donations in a safe place.

Collects payment for delivery charges or disposal fees and turns them into Accounting or Director of Warehouse and Retail Operations.

Adheres to safety measures and maintains truck log and other forms of record keeping (i.e. mileage, maintenance checklists, etc), according to state and federal regulations and Mission requirements.

Positions and secures blocks, cords, wraps, straps, ropes and other protective materials around items to protect cargo during transit.

Must use the necessary resources (including additional personnel) when loading and unloading from trucks to prevent personal injury and/or damage to goods.

Inspects truck equipment and supplies such as tires, lights, brakes, gas, oil and water; ensures the inside and outside of the truck is clean and organized.

Conforms to maintenance schedules for trucks and brings vehicles in on a timely basis.

Performs basic emergency roadside repairs, such as changing tires, as needed.

Preserves a supportive work environment by treating people with dignity, respect, compassion and integrity at all times, and works to resolve grievances; maintains professionalism and promotes a positive Mission image.

Supports and participates in the Work Therapy program; assists Program staff in creating a productive, therapeutic, educational and professional environment that enables clients to learn and/or develop job skills and appropriate workplace behaviors.  

Candidate must be willing to work, train and supervise our program clients as Truck helper assistant and may be required to work/help in warehouse from time to time if needed according to the business needs.

Skills / Requirements

Minimum high school diploma. Minimum one-year work experience as a truck driver, preferably in a warehouse environment.

Previous experience with the homeless, substance abusers, mentally ill and/or dual diagnosed preferred. Nonprofit experience preferred.

Able to lift minimum 30 pounds. At times or special events be able to work evenings, overnights, weekends, and/or holidays as needed.

Must have a current, valid CA Class C drivers license and good DMV record and qualify to be on Missions insurance.
